Artist’s Statement
In The Contained World series, I use black-and-white ink illustrations to explore the delicate tension between human civilisation, nature, and the boundaries that isolate us. By trapping complex landscapes inside the rigid glass walls of bottles, I want to create a metaphor for how we interact with the spaces we build, and how easily we lose touch with the natural world around us.
My decision to work with traditional ink techniques and detailed cross-hatching is central to my artistic process. I use fine lines, dense textures, and sharp value contrasts to create a sense of weight and mood that pulls the viewer in. The intricate detail requires a slow, deliberate approach, mirroring the time it takes to build communities or for ecosystems to grow. I invite the viewer to look close into the illustrations, to examine these tiny, independent ecosystems.
In the first piece, I juxtapose the wild, organic shapes of tropical foliage with a tightly clustered human village, showing how we isolate ourselves from the nature right beside us. In the second piece, I zoom in on a growing, industrial island where heavy smoke twists against the corked ceiling. By trapping the village with its own exhaust, I wanted to create a clear visual warning about pollution and sustainability. These drawings represent my reflections on a world with strict physical limits, urging us to think about what happens when the spaces we create become the cages we cannot escape.
