Artist’s Statement#

These two photographs were taken on a recent 1,600 mile road trip through four states in America.

The source for both of these images were two derelict county vehicles: a snow plow and a dump truck. I was drawn to them by their color and the aging process.

I found the resulting textures far more interesting than the vehicles themselves. Selecting what to photograph is all about isolating an area that includes enough information to be of interest to the viewer, but not so much that the mystery behind the subject is revealed.

About the Artist#

Roger Camp is the author of three photography books, including the award-winning Butterflies in Flight and Heat. His documentary photography has been awarded the Leica Medal of Excellence and published in The New England Review, New York Quarterly, and the North American Review. His archives are held by the University of California, Santa Barbara Library’s Special Research Collections.
