Editor's Note 6/26

Moonshine.
This dessert combines a pretty appearance with palatable flavor, and is a convenient substitute for ice-cream. Beat the whites of six eggs in a broad plate to a very stiff froth, then add gradually six table-spoons powdered sugar, beating for not less than thirty minutes, and then beat in about one heaping table-spoon of pre- served peaches cut in tiny bits (or some use one cup jelly). In serving, pour in each saucer some rich cream sweetened and flavored with vanilla, and on the cream place a liberal portion of the moonshine. This quantity is enough for seven or eight persons. – Mrs. H. G. Meredith, Gambridge City, Ind.

Welcome to our thirty-sixth and June issue!

In this issue, you’ll find our trademark mix of poetry and visual art, along with a new critique column by Dr. Jones Irwin and quite a few new music tracks, including a preview set of Scott Spearly’s upcoming album Rabbit Hole (Scott is a founding member of the long running and critically acclaimed band The Knuckle Dusters).

For books, we’re delighted to say that Ken Anderson’s The Goose Liver Anthology, a reimagining of Mother Goose rhymes in the style of the Spoon River Anthology, has been nominated for the Elgin Awards for the second year in a row. Read a new review of the book by Dr. Herb Kauderer here.

For our next project, we’re busy working up the first draft of our 2026 cookbook fundraiser. The goal of the book is straightforward: we’re looking for fun, unique, easy-to-make recipes that the average cooking enthusiast can try at home. Your own recipe? One passed down in the family? One a friend taught you? That’s exactly what we’re looking for.

And with that, we have poetry by:
