with its rooms the size of
closets, and the windows
show rusty snow, and
now I wait some more
and wait some more
as they look at my X-
rays where they pointed
body-bag-colored cameras
at my spinal guts, cervical
and thoracic fetish – hold
still – and I thought of how
to hold onto stillness,
to grasp it like a kicking
fish in Lake Michigan
when I was nine, and
now I wait some more,
and wait some more,
the snow all falling
horizontally, as if
the world is on its
side, and the walls
are the color of
lab coats, and then,
finally, the chiro-
practor comes out
and says, Yes, well,
unfortunately, there’s
nothing we can do
for your neck, and
I think of them
doing nothing,
and wonder if
they will do
a good job
at doing
nothing,
because
I only want
the finest;
then I leave,
walking into
the confetti
of ghosts
sharpening
snow.
