Artist’s Statement

These photographs were made on film via cheap plastic cameras: the Diana, Holga, and La Sardinia brands. Their plastic lenses and spring mechanisms often produce a dreamy soft focus on photographic film with some vignetting. The Diana and Holga cameras, in particular, produce square images and frequently have light leaks and scratches. Making photographs with these cameras recreates the photographer’s childhood, when images would not be seen until the film was developed and prints from the negatives arrived in the mail.

About the Artist

Michael C. Roberts is a mostly-retired pediatric psychologist who, after publishing a number of professional articles, chapters, and books, is now endeavoring to scratch an itch to be differently creative. He has returned to photography, a familial avocation. He incorporates both digital photography and retro-analogue film formats. He often photographs scenes that are not stereotypical and often overlooked. His images have been published in The Canary, Burningword, The Storms, FERAL, The Healing Muse, Right Hand Pointing, Door is a Jar, Camas, Alchemy Spoon, 3rd Wednesday, The Word’s Faire, and elsewhere. His book of photographs, Imaging the World with Plastic Cameras: Diana and Holga, is available on Amazon.
