Artist’s Statement

The genealogy of this piece can be traced back to Hieronymus Bosch, with his use of sprawling and symbolic crowds, and to H.R. Giger, for his portrayal of his biomechanoids in a way that almost mimics religious iconography. I’ve worked in both these veins to create a sense of providence, of symbolism, and of spiritual fervor in relation to images associated with the Information Age.

Artist’s Statement

Dreamland may very well be digital these days. In this train of thought, I blended the familiarity of a landscape with the digital with the surreal. There is no wall between the subconscious and what appears in your Instagram feed. All moments that are hidden (and are false) (and are held up to the world) blend together into one seamless vision. If Instagram dreams of America, while I dream of Instagram, then why do I see a monolith of teeth?

About the Artist

Nick Marino is a Maryland-based artist and writer. His work often focuses on the surreal, irrational, and obsessive, taking inspiration from artists such as Beksiński, Giger, Warhol, and Bosch.
