I Hope It’s Just a Lie
Lyrics
I Hope It's Just a Lie
VS1
Logically, I know I should probably go
You keep intriguing me back into your gravity
I need a reason, so I drink one
Maybe two or three, so I don’t have to leave
PRE1
Drawing a tattoo, holding my hand,
You write your name on my knuckles
This could be dangerous
But I like the thought of us
Do you, too?
CHORUS
But if you say goodbye
I hope it’s just a lie
Are you afraid we’re standing
At the edge of a cliff on tip toe
Waiting for the jump?
But if you say goodbye,
I hope it’s just a lie
VS2
Please understand, I never had a plan
Only curious watching from across the room
For a whole year, you didn’t get near
Then suddenly you’re showing all your colors now
PRE2
You’re drawing a tattoo, holding my hand,
You write your name on my knuckles
I’m a little gun shy, electrified in your eyes
Are you, too?
CHORUS
But if you say goodbye
I hope it’s just a lie
Are you afraid we’re standing
At the edge of a cliff on tip toe
Waiting for the jump?
But if you say goodbye,
I hope it’s just a lie
BRIDGE
You drew an “X” on my hand
I’m the buried treasure you could discover
Boy, you look a little worried about
If you’re making the right choice
Listen to your inner voice,
You know you should stay
CHORUS
But if you say goodbye
I hope it’s just a lie
Are you afraid we’re standing
At the edge of a cliff on tip toe
Waiting for the jump?
But if you say goodbye,
I hope it’s just a lie
Artist’s Statement
I Hope It’s Just a Lie is a peak into a little story that unfolded in my life. I had a steady gig singing at a bar where a particular bartender worked; I thought he was handsome, but I never really spoke to him, only saw him from afar. Then one day, after a year or so, he started talking to me. He started talking to me a lot. It turns out, he thought I was hot, too. He was planning to move away in a little over a month, but he’d always been curious about me. I found myself drinking, so I had an excuse to sit at the bar and talk more, which he gave to me for free; I’m not proud of that, because stealing is bad! But I was intrigued. We were like magnetic charges that had grown out of control. He wasn’t sure if he should move or not; three days before his plane left, he challenged me to write a song and finish it before he left. So that night, after my gig, at midnight, on my banjo Jojo, this song was born. I wrote until about 2:30 AM, finished it in the afternoon, then played it that evening at my gig - and he was working - and the song made him change his mind and stay and marry me! Just kidding! He left, and good thing he did, because it turned out he was a liar who cheated on his girlfriend. Despite that, I still have this song I love.
