Ranch Hand at Midnight

Ranch Hand at Midnight by Jonathan Borthwick

Artist’s Statement

This piece was born out of a work pass through of Fort Stockton, Texas. I spent the night in a shite hotel off the i10 there and drank at the local local bar near the hotel. The character in this drawing enapsulates the mood i felt in that town on the night after chatting to the very confident locals. I hoped it would be a stark late night proof of a lonely soul, content and surrrounded by his cattle, in his element.

Scratching on Black

Scratching on Black by Jonathan Borthwick

Artist’s Statement

This drawing turned out to be the perfect encapsulation my pool-playing experience. Often great (until I need to be), yet always scratching on black. The nervous exhaustion in this drawing exists in my past as a ghost of the torment grips me when I find myself in an opportune position to win, but well know that I’m going to blow it. That feeling doesn’t haunt me anymore, as I don’t take it seriously, much like most things in life.
