Artist’s Statement

Nasos Karabelas’ photography is an exploration of the human form beyond its physical boundaries. Working in experimental black-and-white photography, he investigates the possibilities of deformation of the human body, transforming familiar shapes into abstract, emotive expressions. His work reflects the tension between presence and absence, clarity and obscurity, capturing the fragile, ever-shifting nature of human emotions and thoughts.

Through the use of long exposure techniques, Karabelas reinterprets his subjects, introducing movement and distortion to challenge traditional perceptions of form. The human figure, central to his artistic approach, becomes a vehicle for introspection and transformation. His images invite viewers to engage with the psychological depth of his subjects, uncovering hidden layers of emotion within each composition.

This series is an exploration of sensation and perception: an attempt to map the emotional space between the image and the viewer. Each photograph exists as an independent entity, embodying a distinct mental state. The blurred contours and fragmented forms create a dreamlike dimension, where reality dissolves into uncertainty. In this ambiguity, the viewer is encouraged to project their own emotions, making the experience deeply personal and introspective.

Karabelas’ work suggests that photography is not merely a means of documentation, but a tool for rediscovery. The deformed and fragile forms in his images symbolize the fluidity of emotions, the instability of perception, and the fleeting nature of existence. His use of black and white enhances this effect, stripping the image down to its rawest essence—light, shadow, and form. With movement woven into each composition, his subjects seem to exist within an altered reality, suspended between dream and chaos.

Through his work, Karabelas challenges viewers to look beyond what is visible, to embrace uncertainty, and to engage with the deeper, often hidden, aspects of the self.
