I got the inspiration for the collage from living in the middle of the Anza Borrego Desert State Park in California. The area has a mid-century vibe and is a dark sky community. We see interesting things in the sky all the time, like lights, orbs, and unexplainable UFO sightings.

Looking through my magazines, I saw an architectural drawing of a 1950s amusement park. I arranged two mid-century buildings on top of each other with lots of concrete in the foreground, leaving the classic cars parked in front, for a retro feel and connecting the areas together.

This collage was made with a collection of pieces cut from an architectural magazine, including a net and map. I am a big fan of classic cars, so I cut out a street view of cars. After taking a picture, I digitally manipulated the image until it was perfect.

About the Artist

Based in Borrego Springs, California, artist Robin Young works in mixed media focusing mostly on collage and contemporary art. Her focus on collage art using magazine clippings, masking tape, wallpaper, jewelry, feathers, foil, etc., allows her to develop deep into the whimsical and intuitive.

From large, life-sized pieces, 3D sculptures, to small postcard-sized arrangements, Robin’s keen eye and gripping esthetic guide her viewers into her own semi-readymade world. Repurposing nostalgic images for lighthearted and sometimes disquieting messages; Robin’s artistic universe is strange, funky, sometimes perverse and always alluring.
