Lyrics
25
twenty-five
i stare into the suburb’s orange streetlights
denise tells the taxi how our night was
and i’m curious
have all the best songs already been written?
boozy birthday beautiful saturday
but something’s missing
i’m twenty five
and now the meaning of life has just been gifted
i feel a bit damaged
but everyone’s dancing
their sprits are lifted
i spin with the strangers
shed all my layers
seeking a balance between joy and labor
i’m twenty five
has the plan for my life fallen in favor?
sex is a weapon
i’ve learnt how to shoot it (i learned)
keep it in the glovebox
i hardly use it
and drink is an old friend
but the warmth that it lends
don’t mind if i lose it
so i stay in motion
makes it a small world
full of friends who’ve known me since i was a girl
and heartsick lessons learns
remember the flame when i see the burn
all my character flaws
shed my skin let you in
see if you’re scared off
i’m selfish, impatient
i never practice moderation
i have so many tricks stuck up my sleeve
so many dark sides he hasn’t seen
now i hear that song on
is it still your favorite?
made you believe in love
let me hear you say it:
call a spade a spade
it’s okay to settle
how long can i play
patron to the devil
take turns doing laundry
swapping wine for whiskey
she sleeps on her side now
tell me you don’t miss me
so i’m twenty-five
and the meaning of life remains in question
i think about god or coincidence
and my grandpa in heaven
spinning with strangers
homesick whispers
hearts that i held i miss my sister
i miss my sister
About the Song
I wrote this song after celebrating my twenty-fifth birthday while living in Cork, Ireland. It’s an epiphany about the tail end of my girlhood slipping away as the excitement of cheap thrills is overcast by missing those who know me best, and worrying about the trajectory of my life. The bridge touches on the feeling of hearing a song that reminds you of someone you once knew.
