Artist’s Statement

The act of collaging for me can sometimes border on the impulsive. Sitting on my sofa, I will often begin flipping through sourced magazines until something piques my interest and off I go with a pair of scissors, slicing the image from the page.

City Obstructed was made from scraps cut from one collage and placed over an old uninteresting collage I created of highrise buildings. To me it looks like the dirty part of that city peeking into a more affluent downtown area.

Don’t Mind Telling You, This Place Is Infected was created from many small detailed pieces intermingled into someplace quite menacing, a place you would not want to go alone. It was given a Stephen King quote title after the finished collage looked like the textile mill in Graveyard Shift.

About the Artist

Based in Borrego Springs, California, artist Robin Young works in mixed media focusing mostly on collage and contemporary art. Her focus on collage art using magazine clippings, masking tape, wallpaper, jewelry, feathers, foil, etc., allows her to develop deep into the whimsical and intuitive.

From large, life-sized pieces, 3D sculptures, to small postcard-sized arrangements, Robin’s keen eye and gripping esthetic guide her viewers into her own semi-readymade world. Repurposing nostalgic images for lighthearted and sometimes disquieting messages; Robin’s artistic universe is strange, funky, sometimes perverse and always alluring. Her work has found its way into many publications including Sunspot Literary Journal, The Closed Eye Open, and Hole in the Head Review. Her work can also be seen in the Borrego Springs Art Institute.
