Artist’s Statement

For the first time I used painter’s tape to create the backbone of the painting (oil on canvas). This freed my obsession with order and structure and allowed my subconscious (consciousness to some degree) to play in different intellectual ways. The product is a piece full of smaller paintings connected by negative space. Color choice felt much more consequential given the limited space and clearly delineated borders. It was a clash between both sides of my brain that felt intellectually and creatively satisfying.

The title speaks to my refusal to title any of my pieces as “Untitled.” I’ve seen it used in interesting ways by other creatives but it feels limiting to me, especially when I have the OED app on my phone. I love the interplay between titles and the work. One more intellectual puzzle that feels satisfying to complete.
