even though I thought I understood
what it means when calls become less regular,
somewhere along the line
I must have forgotten to let go
held down by my own futile expectation
until one day a thunderous rumble
of my own heart beating faster
in recognition of a since deleted number
I barely feel my hand move, I only feel the nail picking
up, where scabbing once was
